You open your eyes.

You’re standing in an alley, grime lining the buildings that cage you in. Above, there are hundreds…no, thousands of bats, screeching in a horrible cacophony of noise. The sky is darkened by them, and there is an unmistakable panic in the air.

How did you get here? You don’t have time to think about that right now, you need to get out of this alley. The walls feel like they’re closing in on you the longer you stand still.

A tug, not a physical sensation but a feeling that draws you towards a building in the distance.

You run, your labored breathing drowned out by the bat’s terrible song.

You fist raps upon the door before you’ve even made a plan, and your heart seizes in your chest as it opens, slightly at first and then a little wider.

“Hello?” An older lady with a real kindness around her eyes stands in front of you. She looks concerned and also, perhaps, like she was expecting someone else.

When you don’t answer, just stare wild eyed, struggling to breathe, she glances behind her and nods to someone inside.

The door opens fully now, and she ushers you in.

“You don’t look fit to answer questions, but I’ll say I’ve not seen clothes like yours.” She comments, leading you down into the basement. Perhaps this would seem ominous in another situation, but you find you trust this woman completely.

Once down there, you see 3 other people. A scruffy redhead, a woman with an elaborate up-do, and someone who is napping, face obscured. You can’t place the feeling that takes root, but you could swear you know them, have seen them somewhere before.

“Thank you.” You say, voice very soft.
