Tech keeps inventing gadgetbahns, bad non-solutions to transit that emphasize technology over what actually works (trains, busses, subways, etc)

Tech is now inventing gadgetpedias, bad non-solutions to knowledge that emphasize technology over what actually works (Wikipedia, encyclopedias, libraries)

of making the world a better place through building things?

that is still a good dream

but the dream is deathly injured and desperately needs the help of anyone who cares

capitalists have been trying to sell us on their alternative to it, their vision of making lots of money through the appearance of making the world better

we need to all work to recognize that temptation in ourselves and move away from it

I'm trying to make my mark, however minimal, and however slow it may be, at @styx-os. our work-in-progress focuses on standards and governance in the discord, before we even begin to work on the software, the services, or the infrastructure, from there - because we are not going to "rebottle the genie" like many projects try to.

a consent-first modular linux-based operating system with no need for GNU Grub, nor formatting or partitioning; and with a minimal and clean "package management" with a DNS-rooted namespace, web-based system management, a lean system/kernel file, and a focus on platform security owned by the installing user, with a strong signature chain from boot attestation through to software insertion, from the local system through to the remote repository - this is honestly something by and large missing from the general-purpose system software ecosystem, let alone "free" software - and these are just some of the goals I have in mind.

it's all things that are not only possible, but doable - and never have been combined before. if I can make computing, owning a computer and using it, less Hell - then I've done my part. even if it ends up that it sucks, I hope it sucks in a good, charming way.
