so on one hand, I'm going to be playing hyrule warriors definitive edition for the nintendo switch for the pc until I die and "nearing the end" is still like. very likely hundreds of hours left

but on the other hand I am kinda wondering what I'm going to replace it with. no other game has worked as well for "background noise that keeps my hands busy while chatting or focusing on something else or watching a show with friends or something". like engaging enough on a moment to moment basis to give me something to do with my hands but also low enough focus to let me use my full focus on something else. old jrpgs I guess but it's not the same. although probably the answer here is "just play real actual dynasty warriors games and/or age of calamity" but idk

I've been having the same exact problem too orz. The most immediately similar musou is probably Fire Emblem Warriors, but idk I've poured hundreds of hours into the game and came out thinking it was kind of... bad? Its playable content is pretty similar to HWDE but Fire Emblem mechanics are obviously at odds with the musou gameplay... AoC is also shockingly really different from HWDE so there's no guarantee that you'll click with it. I've heard a lot of good things about the One Piece musous fwiw, but playing those asks you to be able to tolerate OP's infamously loaded character designs, which is a tall ask for anyone.

I've been on the search for a musou to replace Hyrule Warriors DE once I 100% it 15 years from now and I've yet to find one like it!! I've already accepted none will have as much content as HWDE as that only happened bc of unusual circumstances, but Ive yet to find a game with combat that scratches my brain quite like this game does

that's really unfortunate. I tried fe:w a while back and came to just about the same conclusion. I feel like I gotta try AoC and the dynasty warriors games, but I'm not necessarily expecting either of them to scratch the exact same itch. I've not heard of the one piece musous before, and I guess am tentatively willing to hear them out but am not really expecting much. I'm really starting to wonder if the real play is to just get back into grindy old jrpgs again

Well if you aren't strictly looking for musou I think Monster Hunter might be something you'll click with. I'm not very well versed in MH, I've only ever played Rise which seems to be considered a beginner friendly title lol. Its combat is admittedly slower than any musou out there but it is a bit of a low focus game and I found the gameplay loop of grinding monster materials to craft new armor, to then pursue new targets with said armor really really addicting lolll.

monhun seems really good and definitely fills the role of the sort of progression that hwde gives, but definitely requires too much focus to be a strict replacement to the low-focus background noise to keep my hands busy that I've been getting out of it during The Grind. so the answer might really be that no one thing replaces it, so much as several different things
