I'm excited to buy the 3rd gen apple headset in six years

with all seriousness, I think they're going in a far more viable and appealing direction than anyone else - yes the computer hat is silly conceptually but if it's going to work then it's going to be because the software ecosystem for it is dialled towards productivity & lifestyle stuff, not primarily gaming or metaverse horseshit, which is what every other hardware platform has done

no longer feeling optimistic about this (warning: i have embedded a tweet from an NFT dipshit who happened to work on the apple vision headset)

I think you might be the only person I've seen take this stance on the New Thing, and I agree; no one else has really... Done anything except games or overhyped VRChat Capitalist Hellscapes. Apple will, at least, try to make something that doesn't do at least one of those things!

in reply to @xkeeper's post:

I don't think I care? like, Apple isn't going to be able to make this product only for silicon valley neurotypical white guys obsessed with crypto and LLMs. They're gonna want to sell to China and India, not to mention keep it accessible to neurodiverse people, and if you accept that your audience contains all those people, I firmly believe this whole technology falls flat on its face and will never see the light of day. There is no "one true human thought pattern" that you can predict. Either you're gonna overfit on some people, and fail terribly at the rest, or you're going to overgenericize, and end up with nothing useful from anybody. I think it's quite telling that this guy apparently left the team a year and a half ago. was it a real avenue of research? certainly. did any aspect of it end up in the final product? probably not lol

and besides, if any company is going to be like that, I'd want it to be Apple for privacy purposes.
