it is once again time for the news in brief

it's june 16, 2023, and i had a short week at work, which sucks a little bit when you're paid per piece. here's what I wrote about this week:

  • The American Medical Association strengthened its support for gender-affirming care at the organization's annual meeting this week. The AMA House of Delegates approved a resolution, co-written by trans AMA members and submitted by the Endocrine Society, which asserts the AMA's commitment to protecting the rights of doctors and patients.

  • D. Smith's documentary Kokomo City has an incredible new theatrical trailer that I really recommend you watch. A groundbreaking look at the lives of Black trans sex workers and their complicated relationship with the Black cis men who love them in secret, Kokomo City also carries with it the legacy of one of its subjects, Rasheeda "Koko Da Doll" Williams, who was shot and killed in Atlanta earlier this year. The film releases in theaters July 28.

  • Weird right wing gamers think Call of Duty is woke now because a streamer spread anti-LGBTQ+ propaganda and Activision Blizzard won't sell his character skin anymore. We love relitigating Gamergate in 2023, don't we folks?

  • And finally, Janelle Monae says they're polyamorous, which is really not much of a surprise but confirms that I will be blasting The Age of Pleasure all summer to live my sluttiest life vicariously through them. The full interview in British Vogue is very cool and wholesome!

Call of Duty is like the most impossibly right-wing game imaginable, not merely a bastion of imperialism and American hegemony but structured in a way that promotes hatred. it's wild to think of bigots attacking their own core like that.

I think some of them -- certainly the ideologues like Pool and Raichik that I mention in the piece -- correctly see CoD and similar games as propaganda vehicles, and are affronted they aren't totally aligned with their priorities. their followers have been effectively conditioned to believe that anything can be corrupted by the "woke mind virus," up to and including the actual U.S. military (which is now infested with estrogenized soyboys except for on holidays where we celebrate how upstanding and heroic they are).
