"we need to retire the term NSFW"

okay, please do 30 years of getting people all over to switch in a day so that I can actually switch to muffling the new term too. Until then I'm stuck using the ubiquitous one, and so is everyone who wants to let people muffle it.

"not all workplaces aren't cool with it" okay but no one else uses any other words. people tried to get people to use "lewd", but that didn't have enough of a critical mass because most people still only tag things nsfw

and you need to tag the things, because you're then letting people consent to "maybe being fired" or "maybe reading their feed on a fuckin bus where they'll be Put In A Position for it scrolling past in the wrong time"

and i'm worried with how many people keep thinking other people's livelihoods in a cold job market are like, a thing you have the right to say no to.

cohost has the 18+ flag, i wish people used it more because so much un-folded porn still ends up on my feed, and I have to muffle #nsfw.

but until that ends, you'll still need a tag, and the only tag everyone posting consistently uses (if they bother to at all) is #nsfw.

(to be clear, I'm cool with "the language sucks and we need something different", I'm not cool with "and we should all move away from it" until we change the rest of the world.)

the best writers also share porn. All I want is a way to have it be safe to scroll through the TL while existing in public, thanks. I've worked and am working to change the social structures, as with a lot of us working jobs where they'd be fired for it, but that doesn't mean we're not stuck within the bounds of them.

in reply to @NireBryce's post:

it's honestly a little frustrating how much stuff isnt tagged 18+ that's maybe not sex but like, pretty overtly sexual and probably not something you want to pop up randomly in a lot of contexts

I have had so many things that the tags show the author realizes is nsfw posted without the 18+ flag set, and I hope it's just people from tumblr adjusting but like. yeah.

and it strikes me how a lot of people talking about it (previous times, idk who brought it up this time I've just seen some shares) tend to be ones who don't seem to have worked a variety of jobs and have a pretty strong safety net.

like its a bad term, but people seem to forget that maybe 1.5% of the population, primarily the ones who hold the least power, are this far forward in their thinking and to live we're generally at the whims of the rest of 'em. And it already took a long time to get people to use THAT term instead of just posting porn image links on irc and usenet with no indication that it'd load porn

idk every time it comes around i just gotta ask like... why is this the thing we're deciding is the problem and not the entirety of things surrounding it, with this existing as a poor stopgap but still the only one with high uptake.

do you think people want to be at jobs where they'll be fired for having crotch shots scroll across their feed? no.

do I think they are stuck where they are? yeah generally, have you seen the job market right now? like, people need shelter and food.

I'd be cool if everyone could walk around naked.

but the core of it is until the world changes, you are putting at least a subset of workers' livelihood at risk, which is always weird seeing this come from the left, often by people well acquainted with precarity.

the 18+ tag on cohost serves another purpose, which is that the posts just don't exist to minors who haven't lied about their age upon account creation. is that bad? there's a case to be made for that, but it also reduces regulatory risk, among the obvious reasons.

i'm talking way more generally than tech, but yeah idk there's so many places where you can nominally browse the internet while waiting on processes to complete (think some CNC workflows, as an example I can come up with without coffee yet).

Or where you can be on break but still within a setting where you'll get fired if it happens, like nurse or bus driver.

it comes up every few years and it feels like the disconnect is people not realizing that like, yeah sometimes getting fired because you wanted to talk to your friends because unflagged breasts are on the screen is maybe not a thing to inflict on people without their consent

were it just randos being annoyed at seeing porn at home pushing 'nsfw' i'd feel differently y'know? but it's weirdly anti-worker coming from the left

I think my favorite argument is "Your boss shouldn't fire you for looking at sexually explicit stuff at work!" Okay well, he is. You refusing to tag things NSFW because you want to die on the hill of sexual liberation is not going to change that.

I like my job, and I like spending downtime at that job looking at a website that contains, among other things, stuff I shouldn't be looking at. It would be cool if that stuff was opt-in so I didn't have to worry about it showing up at an inopportune time.

It's also not -necessarily- porn, but lord howdy does everyone assume Sexual content is the only thing that counts as "Not Safe For Work". I wish people included anything that can be "Maybe we shouldn't show this to a large crowd and think about consent" like gore or heavy violence, or hell a few times, live recorded death. The amount of people that don't tag shit or just send it blind with no context is horrifically high.

Some people are also trapped in super conservative places or jobs that are incredibly high, that aren't EVEN IN TECH. Phones go everywhere! It's so weird this is always just a "Tech Sector" thing.

It's also useful to tag because you... might be in public and still not at a job bit.

Like if I get tagged to check out a post and it's horribly gorey and violent?

The amount of times people have sent me a link etc, and it's just uhhhh close call for being in a busy family environment at the time.
