cohost stealing the delusional google ad engineer's comment of "but ads are good! they show people the products they want to buy but didn't know!" and making it actually real

by, you know, making them have to be user instead of broker created, and presented without targeting so i can actually see interesting things instead of things i "want to see"

this last part is a really insidious and often-missed part of Recommendation Engines. They don't show you things that will blow your mind, because they're trying to show you things only at the edges of what they already know you care about. in many ways they make it harder to find things that are actually novel. not information bubbles as much as stunted learning outside of your specialty.

which like, good thing you get all your new from them i guess.

I think in the web era we have forgotten that ads do have value and you don't have to try to squeeze them in around the edges of things that people want to see. You can just make them useful and/or pretty and people will seek them out.
