Thrawn made me so mad reading those books as a kid for reasons I couldn't articulate and in hindsight it's that in the movies (at that point, prequels and onward sort of undermined this) one of Star Wars's strong points visually in the battle of the "Star ___" franchises was the aliens were all pretty dang alien, even the mostly humanoid ones had something going on weirder than face paint or little forehead wrinkles. "He looks like a human but his skin and eyes are a different color" felt supremely un-Star Wars-ey to me (and the fact that it was in a book so there's not even the "the effect is less expensive" justification made it all the more unforgivable)...
