I want to sing
your praises
from the roof.
you brought me
my orb! Woof!
Woof! Woof!

Clamperl
I found out that, as a general rule, most small-sized first stage pokemon fit into a 40x40 pixel canvas (48x48 for medium and middle stages, maximum of 56x56 for final stage, large, & detailed pokemon) in gen 1&2, so I'll be trying to loosely stick to that going forward, unless I need the extra space. Clamperl easily fits with a bit of room to spare.

They might be a forgettable pokemon to most, but I have a good amount of nostalgia for Clamperl, they're the reason the gen 3 contest theme is forever stuck in my head. I don't think I ever beat the master rank with mine though; too young at the time to comprehend how contests worked. I don't think I have that Clamperl anymore, idk where they went; lost to time, I guess.

Might be a hot take, but I like Clamperl better than either of it's evolutions. They're just an adorable, sleepy little guy nestled comfortably on it's little flesh-bed. The evolutions are obscure to obtain and underwhelming, imo. I didn't even know they evolved when I was a kid, had to figure that out from my brother's Diamond/Pearl Prima guide. Kinda has the Remoraid-Octillery problem of evolving into something largely unrelated in design to the previous stage. I know the theme is handgun to cannon w/ Remoraid and Octillery, but no idea what they were getting at with Clamperl to Huntail/Gorebyss. It doesn't seem to be related to, like, obscure Japanese mythology or anything like that either.

My pet theory is that the lil actual Clamperl guy inside the shell is an oarfish egg being protected. Like it's just a lil guy and it's smol and fragile but then if it manages to survive it evolves into a 6 foot long bitey boy that can handle itself, so it needs a shell to hide in. And cause the deep sea is so unknown we have to dig up rare deep sea relics to have any hope of actually getting our hands on these magical species

Or they were just, like, really drunk and were giggling their asses off about a chompy clam mouth turning into Huntail's chompy gulper eel mouth

Maybe, still hung up on the dex entry implying that it sheds the pearl on evolution. Also, it's apparently carnivorous and clamps down until it's prey stops moving; so whatever the pearl is, it can't be fragile enough to get damaged in the middle of that kind of a struggle (assuming the dex isn't full of it).

Maybe the pearl itself is a type of inner shell for the organisms vital organs and it metamorphosizes and fills-in and sheds the now fully inorganic pearl during evolution, no longer needing it. Idk; made up fantasy animal doesn't have to make sense, I suppose.

I guess real-life nature doesn't always seem like it makes complete sense either. Like, if caterpillars didn't really exist and metamorphosize in the way that they do we'd all be saying "It changes from a worm, to a rock, to some kind of messed-up looking bird? What where they thinking?!!!" about Caterpie or other bug-types, lmao.
