To explain: (reposted from here)

The classic British radio comedy panel game I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue features a recurring segment called Uxbridge English Dictionary, in which panellists take turns proposing humourous new definitions for existing words. This became somewhat of a phenomenon, sparking multiple physical books over many years, and of course countless listeners take to social media to suggest their own definitions.

As a fan myself, I figured it'd be fun to introduce the format over here (since it seemed nobody else had done so yet), and apparently y'all quite like it.

I’m also delighted that a whole bunch of you borrowed my css styling for it. The original radio game was just “[word], [definition]” spoken aloud, but I figured a dictionary-esque visual style would help clue new readers into the format. Apparently I started something of a trend!

As I was taking stock of my posting history, I realized just how much I have benefitted from this bit, and I now have a (growing!) repository of my contributions. I plan on continuing the bit post-host (probably on Pillowfort for now), so if you're at all inclined, I would absolutely include a link in my archive to (for example) a moonbase repost of this explanation to credit you as the person who introduced me to the bit. :eggbug-wink:

ngl, before I read your explainer, I thought the Uxbridge English Dictionary was something you came up with yourself! Being not British, I had no exposure to the original radio thing and only knew it as a running gag from your social media posts :D

It's been great fun to read (and contribute the few entries I could before the eggbugalypse). I hope the format keeps going on Fedi/Mastodon and whereever else!
