This was a Panache brand fountain pen, although the nib used was Manuscript brand.

Ideally, I'd like to replace it with something that is...

  • durable, so I don't have a repeat of this in five more months
  • good for writing in a wide range of environments (I'm a cashier so I can't really lug a big desk around with me when I want to write)
  • really fucking cool looking so I can show off
  • compatible with ink cartridges
  • able to change out the nib

I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment, but my birthday is coming up soon so I'll probably put it on my wishlist if I can't buy it myself.

you hate to see it :( if you're looking for a replacement, drop a post with what criteria you're looking for in the #fountain pens tag, the folks here are nice and knowledgeable and would be happy to rec you a good new pen within your budget!

in reply to @fennaixelphox's post:

For inexpensive but interesting and convenient pens, have a look at these ones. All of them come with converters to use with bottled ink except as noted:

Pilot Metropolitan (solid pen from a great brand in lots of great colours)
Hongdian Forest (extremely pleasant to use, feels and looks like it's worth more than it is, easy to swap nibs)
Majohn A1/A2 (retractable clicky fountain pens for a great price!)
Platinum Plaisir (great colours and a great nib, cap design avoids dryout for a very long time. this one does not come with a converter)

Many pens take proprietary cartridges but I suspect what you have are short standard cartridges based on what I can see of the cartridge and what Google suggests. Those should actually fit in the Hongdian Forest!

So a if it has a flat end it's considered either a "stub" or "italic." The only difference between those two is that "italic" is sharper especially at the corners, which means the line will be crisper with more differentiation between the up and down strokes, but it's easy to snag the nib, requiring the writer to slow down.

The slanted ones are called obliques. A nib can be just oblique, or it can be an oblique stub or an oblique italic. These are harder to find though and often are custom jobs.

For some inexpensive italic options:

  • Pilot Metropolitan, Plumix, and Prera have a very nice narrow stub nib option. It's really good, but because it's narrow, you don't get a ton of line variation.
  • Pilot also has the Parallel line of calligraphy/art pens that come in a wide range of sizes and are very cool. They use a different cartridge style (I would usually refill these with a syringe to use different inks) and have very sharp corners, meaning that you have to be quite deliberate when working with them. They aren't traditional nibs, rather they're two flat square sheets of steel sandwiched together.
  • You can look for any pen that takes standard replacement nibs. The most common type of replacement nib is a Jowo #6. Jin Hao pens often use this nib unit type. You can check Jetpens or Goulet to find both the nibs and pens that will take them. Jin Hao and Moonman are popular generics. There are also fancy pens that take the same nib type. You can easily find 1.1mm and 1.5mm stubs in this form factor, and there are also lots of folks who do customized ones.
  • Kaweco has an inexpensive calligraphy set option, and it's very easy to get aftermarket Kaweco nibs in different sizes, most of which are inexpensive. The only problem with

Some more pricey options:

  • TWSBI is a popular option in the like $50-100 range, and you can get their pens in a couple different stub widths. They're really neat pens, but they don't have the best reputation for reliability/durability. The plastic often cracks.
  • Music nibs are extra wide stubs which sometimes have an extra slit in the nib to feed more ink. Sailor, Platinum and Pilot have fancy pens that offer them.
  • Franklin Christoph has a really cool gigantic music nib available as an option for its pens that take #6 size nibs. This is one of my all time favorite nibs. You can also just buy the nib on its own, but getting it to work with other pens can take some modding.

gonna throw my hat in the ring for the kaweco perkeo! maybe not as classy looking, but comes in plenty of colors, pretty cheap (~17 USD), and takes standard international carts. i've heard others say if you use the short cartridges you can fit a spare inside too. plenty of nib options including stubs. can't confirm if the nibs are swappable but the odds are good considering their other pens can do it.

i recommend this over the popular kaweco sport because of the snap cap! probably more convenient for a cashier.

the pilot metropolitan is a similar price and very beloved, but it has a larger "step down" from the pen body to the grip, which i found uncomfortable. still an excellent pen punching way above its price.
