I haven't even finished printing the Overload Chess set and I'm already having ideas for a different chess variant lmao

  • Game title is "Caïssa's Crusaders". Caïssa is a dryad who is generally considered to be the goddess of chess.
  • It's a chess themed RPG similar to The Ouroboros King, although each level is predetermined, rather than randomly generated like in TOK.
  • I want to try and have somewhere between 100-150 different chess pieces to pick from, and possibly some sort of upgrade tree for them? Like you could upgrade your Bishop into an Archbishop, or something else maybe
  • The storyline follows you going after an Evil Organization™️ who uses Evil™️ chess pieces to commit their Evil Deeds™️
  • There would also be an overarching theme of rejecting the role you're born into, even if it seems immutable (after all, a chess piece is a chess piece, no matter what it wants in life, a Knight will always and only be a Knight. But what happens when the Knight says "Fuck that, being a Bishop seems way more fun!"?)1
  • The first boss would be Sisyphus, who pushes his boulder forward or diagonally forward, one square at a time, and when he reaches the end he jumps back to the first rank. The boulder blocks attacks from pieces in front of him, and when it rolls backward, it crushes all pieces in its path, friendly or otherwise.
  • There would be a "Check Combo" mechanic. If you check your opponent multiple times in a row, without making non-checking moves, each new check would be captioned as follows:
  1. CHECK!
  2. DOUBLE-CHECK!
  3. TRIPLE-CHECK!
  4. TETRA-CHECK!
  5. PENTA-CHECK!
  6. HEXA-CHECK!
  7. HEPTA-CHECK!
  8. OCTA-CHECK!
  9. ENNEA-CHECK!
  10. DECA-CHECK!
  11. HECTO-CHECK!
  12. KILO-CHECK!
  13. MEGA-CHECK!
  14. GIGA-CHECK!
  15. TERA-CHECK!
  16. PETA-CHECK!
  17. EXA-CHECK!
  18. ZETTA-CHECK!
  19. YOTTA-CHECK!
  20. RONNA-CHECK!
  21. QUETTA-CHECK!2
  • If you get out of check by putting your opponent in check, the game would call it a "Counter-Check"
  • As a timeout mechanic, there would be a Plague that starts to kick in after 50 full turns (i.e. White makes a move, then Black makes one). When the Plague is active, the board turns a sickly, green color, and every time you move, one of your pieces dies at random, including your King.)
  • You'd be rated on each stage from one to five stars. You get the first one for free just for winning the battle, but the other four would have to be earned by:
  1. Capturing a specific piece. 3
  2. Winning the battle in less than [some amount of] turns.
  3. Winning the battle with less than [some amount of] casualties.
  4. Capturing more than [some amount of] opposing pieces.4

  1. Also this sounds like a trans allegory I think. A buddy of mine who's trans also thought it sounded like one when I asked about it lol

  2. There would also be an achievement for managing to get all the way to Quetta-Check for the first time, aptly called "Imaginary Checknique: Purple".

  3. This piece would be marked with a sniper reticle, and would also be shown on a "Wanted" poster in the corner of the screen.

  4. I'm not sure if this should be "more than" or "less than". They both imply that you did well in mutually exclusive ways. If you won while capturing only a few pieces, you were able to defeat your opponent even at full strength, while if you won by capturing a lot of pieces you were able to overwhelm them to strike effectively.
