"So Delta Ranger Orange-" The writer finally learned not to address him by his boring family name "-did you pick to be Orange? Or was it entirely coincidental?"

Orange lounged around the Delta Ranger HQ lobby. He sucked playfully on his sour lollypop. He was almost sick of the orange flavor, but he had a reputation. A bit. And he was saving the lemon and lime candy for when he really wanted to drive home the "freak" point.

"As one of the founding members, I picked it of course." Orange fell onto the couch playfully. He stared up at the ceiling, "But tell them- the people- it was serendipity. Destiny."

"Haha I'll set the record straight." The biographer smiled and jotted down notes. You don't write about magical boys unless you're a bit of an eccentric yourself. "So let's get into the meat of it today. Why do magical guardian work? You're a veteran. In my research I was surprised to learn you started at basically it's advent. Most of your peers have long retired."

Orange, too energetic to stay put for long, was already pacing the lobby again. "Aaah- my beginnings- how nostalgic! Well-" Orange turned to lock eyes with the writer for a moment "I didn't always look like this. I guess- in the modern view- it must look like I got in early. But to me, I got in late. I was 37. That meant something different back then, before magitech was more common."

Orange sighed. He was a bit peckish. He waltzed over towards the fridge, "I was a salaryman." He smiled. "It felt like living in a box. The job- you see. There was really only one major company in town. So you were expected to work for it. Unless you were smart enough to leave town. And I never was."

Orange had arrived at the fridge. Someone forgot to restock it. Orange picked up an apple. It had begun to rot. He held it pensively.

"So the moment I heard of magical guardian work- well it felt too good to be true. I was certainly not the cute, enthusiastic Orange I am now. I was hardly even in shape. Ha." Orange paused. "It's kind of embarrassing, you know? I didn't even have it that hard- I think. Other people turn to magic because they had the wrong body. Or it helps them overcome some personal limitations. I was just slowly decaying in a life I hated!"

Orange returned to the fridge to grab his namesake fruit. The citrus was still good and, unlike his candy, he could never tire of this flavor. He'd save it for later. "So I was more than happy to be a magical guardian! I want to say it was my appealing charm and can-do attitude that attracted the Delta Guardian to me, but those came later. Signing up to be a magical guardian in that era- well it kind made you a freak! So I think it worked out because I was more than willing to leave my life behind and put in the hard work."

The biographer's pen finally caught up to Orange's words. "Juicey- if you don't mind my commentary. Why don't we take a break for now? And- if you don't mind, I'd like to interview the Delta Guardian themselves for their side of the story."

"Be my guest!" Orange smiled, now having wandered over into a chair. It felt weird to be candid about the past. But hey- with his retirement looming, he'd tell his story to anyone who cared to listen.
