I find it alienating to watch people get super aggressive and weird about leftism or discourse online.
On one hand, it feels like a good portion of the internet runs on dunks, outrage, and shame- and I don't want anything to do with that. I've been in/around irl progressive liberal spaces that run like that, and I have never felt great about those spaces. I'll admit- these spaces are good at dunking on right wingers. But the moment those right-winger are gone, these spaces just encourage pedantic criticism, cat-fights, and other forms of toxic undermining.
On the other hand, if I deeply disagree with someone who seems genuine, passionate, and/or well-researched, it's so simple to not engage with them. Difficult conversations and honest criticism are extremely vulnerable acts that I reserve for my friends. Its rarely worth it for me to get into fights with internet randos. The few times I do, I'm often like "you know, this was awkward- no one seems to be happy here- I'm just gonna block and move on." I don't know why you'd seek out these interactions??? Its so easy to move on.
So overall I just wish I could be in spaces not poisoned by this stuff.
