So I've been getting back into Command and Conquer with the release of the whole collection on Steam, and with that I've been getting back into all the Red Alert 2 and Generals mods I used to play as a kid.
Been poking all the campaigns too, and I've reached some interesting conclusions- less about the games themselves and more about myself, namely that I think what I wanted out of strategy games was less the micromanagement and high-actions play, and more... almost a sandbox to play in?
I like building bases, defending them, seeing variety in units, discovering things, it's almost a stim toy feel, which tracks- as a kid I wasn't good at these games, but I enjoyed them so much. Dunno if any modern games have captured that vibe for me since, barring things like Rimworld for the base-building and storytelling. It's neat!
