@AnotherRedDerg asked:

I am curious what your opinion on the F-22 is! (yes, my entire knowledge of military aviation is derived from Ace Combat)

The F-22 is, on paper, the most advanced fighter aircraft on earth. Technologically, in maneuver, in stealth, in systems nothing- and I do mean nothing- comes close. It is the predominant air superiority aircraft in the world today.

It is also completely unnecessary, overpriced, far too fragile in actual operation, and a waste of money. Outside of ground attack and ELINT information gathering in Syria, it has never seen action in its intended role, its multibillon dollar project’s only “success” being to shoot down a spy balloon. Its contemporary foes are rusty cold-war era soviet fighters, it requires air-controlled hangars to operate abroad, and that money could have gone towards modernizing the F-15 fleet, which is what’s happening now instead of producing other F-22s.

It’s an engineering marvel, but engineering is only one part of what makes a successful program, and in every other aspect, like many modern American military-industrial programs, it is an immense failure.

Oh the F-35 is miles better. Cost overruns aside, it is exactly what was set out to make, a replacement for a wide swath of outdated aircraft. The F-22 is a single-trick pony whose trick is completely irrelevant today.

Oh shit, actually? Damn, I didn't think they'd ever actually engineer out the seemingly infinite problems that thing had. Shows me for relying on information I kinda sorta knew like 10 years ago.

I will never forgive or forget the cost overruns though.

The F-35’s teething problems were mostly overblown by people who had an agenda in marking it as a failure, Pierre Sprey and the like, and became popular in the zeitgeist in contrast to the reality of the program.

You shouldn’t forgive the current military-industrial complex for existing as a whole, not one aircraft, really.

Yeah, I don't. I despise everything the military-industrial complex stands for, and I could have worded this series of asks and replies to be clearer on where I stand on it. At the end of the day, these are machines to kill people and destroy lives powered up by a system fueled by sociopathic greed, and I despise these pork-barrel projects that get any and all money they ask for while america's social services starve and the planet burns.

I did come across as at least neutral on the military-industrial complex here, and I'm sorry.

Nah I didn’t think you were defending it at all, just asking questions! Performative outrage does us no good, and I’m not gonna go “you weren’t outraged enough to hit my arbitrary Anarchist Points Score” 😜

okay phew, my autistic ass was worried I had actually gotten you angry,,,

You did answer my real question about the f-22, which was more along the lines of 'hey, this plane seems kinda over-engineered and cripplingly over-specialized?', and yeah!

fucking air controlled hangers to deploy them abroad, goddamn...

Jets can be cool and also one can remember what they’re meant for, you don’t have to writhe and twist to explain being interested in them, just bear that in mind without becoming a war otaku. It’s really as simple as that.

“War is bad, jets are rad”
