In a collision, either the vehicle deforms, or the passengers do.

Since the Passengers are a third-party, after-market addition to the vehicle, Tesla has decided to simply allow them to fail and let consumers replace them rather than spend unneeded engineering resources delivering a compromised product. </sarcasm>
