#i was thinking a lot about how pokemon is one of the few japanese franchises that managed to largely Avoid westernizing its aesthetics#then i found this interview where satoshi tajiri and tsunekazu ishihara discuss game freak's history n they bring this up#some of the proposed changes NoA wanted to make were depicting the characters like this in place of sugimori's watercolors#and replacing pikachu with a furry boob lady#glad they didn't turn pikachu into a furry boob lady but i'm honestly kind of obsessed w/ nintendo wanting to do the street art thing so heavily in the late 90s-early 00s#the Who Are You? ad campaign feels like the last breath for that vibe#graffiti charizard fucking rules also. looks kinda like spyro#nintendo would not have survived the sony dickrider allegations had they gone thru with it tho
