the first thing that stands out about this song is the furious drum intro. it's eight seconds long - five bars of continuous 16th-note triplets. it takes a lot of coordination to do that so consistently.
the next thing is the song's pace. it's constantly moving. the song is about someone stranded on a mountain, but there's no slow, regretful lament - it rushes ahead, driven by the bouncy drumming and distorted keyboard chords.
there's a good guitar solo, a fun keyboard solo, and even the bass gets a turn! i love all the guitar riffs and licks that ritchie blackmore put into the song. he even gets the opportunity for a second, extended guitar solo after the fake ending.
Somebody's shouting up at a mountain
Only my own words return
Nobody's up there, it's a deception
When will I ever learn?
I'm alone here
With emptiness, eagles and snow
Unfriendliness chilling my body
And whispering pictures of home
