no, yeah, it was kind of a pain trying to draw anything that looked square on that hardware. much easier to just do designs that didn't need to be.

You know, all my memories of CGA are the wonder that out of such a limited range of colors they managed to produce such an incredibly ugly set of color choices...
while the palettes were uniquely hideous, the way they automapped grayscale to color i think might be the main reason for their hideousness in practice
I'd forgotten that CGA also used non-square pixels; my first attempted graphics thing not in Apple II's 40x40 gr mode was an EGA equation grapher in BASICA. (640x350 stretched to a 4x3 aspect ratio)
ah! yeah! yeah making them square apparently cost more at first since that wasn't how televisions had done it... an exactly-square aspect ratio was one of the distinctive things about the Macintosh, when it came out
