a friend recommended this song to me! it's a fun one. very much from the '60s in a lot of ways:
- the rhythm is a shuffle! this song is from 1968, and it took until the '70s for most heavy music to move further away from the blues
- the main riff is driven by a distorted melody instead of distorted chords, so it feels more like "heavy rock" than "heavy metal"
- the drums and bass are loud and thumping - it seems like they tried to make the song heavier and more intense by turning up the low end
- there are horns! why are there horns? who knows, but they work
the band sounds like they're having a lot of fun! especially the singer, with his wild laughter in the middle. the solos play some pretty wild licks, too.
the shuffling drums make the song feel like it's marching towards some inevitable conclusion... but the ending fades out, and it's over before i know it.
oh well. guess they won't tell me who won the race.
but it's easy to replay! i can listen to this song on repeat for a while without getting bored. the main riff sticks in my head, too.
