some of you might recognise this little fellow! it's an emote from the something awful forums, but it got famous over a decade ago for appearing in this little video:
it's cute! i like the happy music in it. it's a chiptune called "Happy H. Christmas" made by a guy called "Drax".
a note on the music's format
the track was written as an XM file - an "extended module" file, which is a kind of tracker music. you write tracker music by using a program called a "tracker" to specify which notes to play at what time. all the instruments are samples. the instruments are included with the music file.
the music files for tracker music are called "module files". they're commonly used in the demoscene, where they serve as small, self-contained soundtracks to the demo animations. if you want to listen to more module files, you can find them at the mod archive. two that i really like are space debris and guitar slinger. they're wonderful modules with lovely melodies and very interesting technical details. here's a blog post by the creator of "space debris" explaining how he made it! if you read his post, you can also listen to his remixes and remasters of the original track.
my first encounter with the "it is a mystery" ghost wasn't on the something awful forums or on youtube. instead, it was on tumblr. there's a famous post about someone whose phone was gotten hold of. the person who got the phone changed all the contacts and ringtones to "it is a mystery". so whenever someone called them... it was a mystery!
