I love fighting games, soulsbornes, and adaptations of Warhammer 40,000.

how come music has the most scummy business practices of the various mass medias? the RIAA are the most awful of the entertainment professional associations, the copyright surrounding music playback and sampling is infamously litigious, and music more than anything seems the most rife with artists getting hustled out of their earnings. what about the structures and history of the recording industry leads to them being more odious than, like film, tv, games or internet media?

my guess is that recorded music was the first home media, and the old shellac and vinyl pressers have had a lot of time to figure out how control the use and distribution of their music when it's out of their hands, compared to how film companies just had to worry about which theaters were holding their reels.
