I love fighting games, soulsbornes, and adaptations of Warhammer 40,000.

is it a good idea to have all your game's data and assets bundled up in one big .WAD file? I like the getup Doom has where the source code is freely available but you still have to pay for the WADs. wishful thinking maybe, but successful games that are open source/easy to mod always foster passionate communities, and so many budding game devs got their start by modding their favorite games. I'm just wondering if that's going to create maintainability issues if assets/levels/data needs revising. Failing that, there's always Quake's model of having all the data in one folder.

I think a lot about how so many famous engineers got their start taking apart toys and appliances in their childhood to see how they worked. nowadays stuff is made with tamper proof screws for planned obsolescence reasons, and that's probably going to have some unforseen consequences for the next generation of engineers.

instead of constantly talking about what i wanna make and sitting on my lazy ass, i've actually decided to do some damn freeform gamedev instead of just following a rote tutorial.

currently trying to adapt @eniko 's basic 3d tutorial in SFML. got sfml drawing some basic graphics and responding to basic input, gonna take a break for today, see if i pick up tomorrow.

alright. day 2. i'm basically learning a lot of c++ on the fly here. it's been almost a decade since i was last formally taught, and unlike C and JavaScript it's not something i've even practiced sporadically with. my copy of The C++ Language is half a world away, so i'm very much using the "banging my head against the wall till it gives way" school of self-education.

I've tried and failed a bunch to get external classes and headers working properly, so it's all in the main file for now. I've ended the night getting some shapes to do rotational movement in addition to just pivoting on the spot, it's just not moving in the proper arc.
