I recently played We Know the Devil, a queer horror visual novel fun slice-of-life at summer camp that juxtaposed Should and Shouldn't from should and shouldn't.

It had far more to offer than just 'summer camp can be effed up, especially if you're not heteronormative' (a story I would've been more than happy with), with brutally honest writing and some really good twists. But the most impressive part was how well the music complemented the story. The music doesn't contain spoilers so feel free to listen.

  • Constant distortion and drones for the oppressive, suffocating atmosphere. Ultrakill also uses this in its 'breakcore' soundtrack to great effect, and it's also about religious oppression (and lowkey queer af but that's another discussion)
  • Static accompanies the radios in the story, both important metaphors, the meanings of which I can't explain without spoilers
  • It's really loud. I usually hate that but it weirdly fits. They are screaming in pain :)
  • The synth music was mentioned on the store page as trying to evoke 80's horror, but it's doubly fitting in that religious homohysteria peaked at that time. Maybe I'm reaching too far with this one
  • I'm no expert but I think at least one of the tracks was in a major key, which is actually great for sad/lonely/hopeful music in my opinion, as long as it's slow. Perfection

Overall, strange and messy and beautiful, just like the game. I will continue to Feel Things for a while. Good stories will do that to you. Good music will do that to you.
