THE CHECKOUT COUNTER  /  NOVEMBER 2022
ISSUE 01  /  INTRO

this is going to be a (hopefully) recurring post that will act as a wrap-up for what i've been watching, reading, etc. for the month. so it's a recommendations list, but it's also more like a "this was interesting, others may want to check it out" list.

  • i've been going through the filmography of dominique abel and fiona gordon.[1] in their first film, iceberg, the manager of a fast food restaurant accidentally locks herself into a walk-in fridge. after escaping, half frozen and barely alive, she develops an obsession for the cold.
  • thanks to a particular dance scene[2] in another of the above directors' films, i've been listening to la revancha del tango.
  • greaser is an atmospheric interactive fiction piece about a girl, her motorbike, and some grease.
  • it's always fun to revisit a film you think you remember, then realize while watching that you've completely forgotten the second half. this happened recently with the talented mr. ripley.
  • just a few days after i finished disco elysium for the first time, the creatives behind the game announced the dissolution of their cultural association,[3] and an ongoing, hard-to-follow dispute has followed. this, along with the recent high of completing the game, has led me to my current state of: I'm Still Thinking About Disco Elysium Two Months Later. thankfully, i'm not alone: the 2021 article a year later, i still can't stop thinking about disco elysium is a promise that i, too, will still be thinking about this game well into the new year.

IN SHORT
we'll see if i remember to continue this thing next month—and hopefully with a longer list! until then.

in reply to @fish's post:

I like this post format - it's a nice way to have records of media, before they're lost in the sands of time. (I too, think of Disco Elysium often. I recently restarted it, I must go back to that). (also, La Revancha Del Tango is a banger of an album)

yes! if it weren't for sites like letterboxd it would be very easy for me to forget what i've been watching, so i'm hoping these posts can act as a nice journal/aggregate of things i've been enjoying.
