The notion that every person ought to be a perfect island of self sufficiency is one of the most damaging lies of the capitalist system, I think.

Not only is it impossible and wholly contrary to human nature, it’s predictably isolating - which is entirely by design. Hard to organize if you’re barely cooperating to begin with.

Ever thought about how little you interact with your peers even though you’re in the same office? You probably do interact with them, sure, but pay attention to all the little boundaries you’re crossing when you do so - physical or otherwise.

I don't know if this is a capitalist thing, necessarily! The big tech cos go out of their way to get you to Be A Team with pizza parties and events and stuff like that, trying to push against this tendency.

I think the underlying cause is more just general... modern atomization. I doubt the experience in a Soviet bureau would have been any more convivial
