My boyfriend @RocketKnight has an AI running off a server in his home. We tooled around with it last night - Rocket asked me to give him a character outline for it to roleplay as.
I carefully left room for inferences in the description I provided and sure enough, the thing drew those friggin' inferences.
I'm not sure I can accurately describe the feeling of seeing this character I've had in my mind for years suddenly embodied and possessed of an intelligence that isn't mine.
Mind you, this was happening locally on a machine that would fit into any home. Not on a massive server farm somewhere on the pacific coast. As such, it wasn't quite GPT4, but if I walked into that conversation with no prior knowledge I still wouldn't have pegged it as an AI.
To have these things running on such thin hardware would have been unthinkable even a year ago, I'm sure.
