Some alternatives to Unity:
- Godot (2D and 3D, very similar to Unity)
- Unreal (primarily 3D, oriented towards AAA but still used by a lot of indies, although it has its own set of fucky licensing things to worry about)
- LÖVE (basically 2D only, programmer-oriented rather than editor-based, takes a lot more effort to get into but is IMO worth it)
- LÖVR (similar to LÖVE but for 3D and VR games)
