I personally really liked Sufjan's The Ascension, from its howling desperation opening of Make Me An Offer I Cannot Refuse, to the A-side-B-side combo of Ursa Major and Landslide on how dangerous and slippery a slope loving can be, to the perfect cocky lamentation of letting go of Goodbye To All That, to the damning, terrified political anthem conclusion of don't do to me what you did to America.

But so far the singles that we've seen out of sufjan's new album Javelin (out October 6th) — including today's Will Anybody Ever Love Me? — have me convinced that this can be a Big sufjan album in a way The Ascension couldn't. The banjo is back, and we're seeing sad, hurting sufjan meet earnest plucking sufjan and electronic madness sufjan (in moderation) and choral echo sufjan (in celebration) altogether in a way that I think has mainstream appeal. It could be that these two (WAELM and So You Are Tired) that we've seen so far are just the best tracks off of an album that will prove too alienating when taken in bulk. But I'm excited and looking forward to feeling this catharsis of sadness, and not being alone in the sadness we can share together.
