i don't really know Anything about self-driving cars but I do wish that like... cars could talk to one another? do you know what i mean? like if I'm driving and I put my turn signal on. or if i have a directions or sat-nav on that indicates where I'd be going on this highway. the car behind me can know "hey that car is thirty feet ahead of you, going 65 mph but is about to be going rightward" even if it doesn't do the manual operations. if my car and another car are 100' feet away from each other approaching an intersection with a building obscuring the way, they should be able to go "hey car!! car to your left coming towards us" to one another. nothing AI, nothing advanced, just like "we have this big machines with computers in them; let them beep beep each other"

It seems like really low-hanging fruit, doesn't it - an open near-field communication protocol that could just broadcast what the car is doing to it's neighbours, perhaps even pass on from the car ahead/behind too, creating a self-regulating network.

I would guess the reason this isn't done is partly that car makers don't really care for open technology, so it would have to be some kind of regulatory mandate and protocol definition rather than something created within the industry.
