I was explaining the Purim story to my partner, because xe asked why you eat hamantaschen on Purim, and was struck by a ray of inspiration

the joke (in its entirety) is that the villain of Purim is named Haman, and so is the villain of ZZ Gundam (she also appears in Zeta but I thought Judau was a funnier character to include than Kamille).

I only learned about the Purim Haman yesterday and continue being confused about the significance of naming things in Gundam. Like, naming a villain who is aligned with Axis – which has very clear references to Nazi Germany – after a very prominent genocidal antisemite from the Tanakh has to be intentional, but does it go beyond "yeah sounds cool"?

ZZ Gundam also names a character “Rommel” explicitly after a Nazi general, so there’s a lot to unpack to Gundam’s relationship to antisemitism.

Haman is also a name that other people have had (eg I think there’s a guy in the Quran which the same name) so I’m not sure it’s a direct reference.
