googled it at 1:35 AM and was shocked to learn melatonin is apparently not habit forming, and you don’t build a tolerance to it? I must have associated trazadone (which a number of people I know are on) with all sleep aids and gotten myself worried for nothing. TIL

melatonin, as far as i can tell, is an extremely weird brain chemical that i have had immensely positive experiences with. not habit-forming, not tolerance-inducing (except maybe a light psychological effect of readjusting expectations for how tired you need to be to get to sleep?) - and then the actual chemistry of it, as far as i can tell, is borderline un-studied. there's very strong evidence for melatonin helping with chronic headaches (hi), and absolutely no evidence for people with chronic headaches having reduced levels of melatonin in any way. it also seems to metabolize weirdly? like studies ive read say that basically after taking melatonin supplements, levels of melatonin in the body aren't significantly elevated except basically right after? and they can't find what it metabolizes into? anyway hope that it's helpful for you!
