well, that's the thing: it's a land shellfish. the kosher rule forbidding shellfish (iirc) is specifically about the fact that it's a creature of the water without fins or scales

unfortunately bugs are also not allowed (unless they are one of four specific kinds of locusts, and we're not sure which locusts those are) so I think living armor is not kosher

Yup, apparently the rule is something like

goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet, any swarming thing that swarms on the ground, you shall not eat, for they are detestable.

and a snail is definitely going on its belly
