Are there any programming communities on the internet that are fun and not geared towards learning? Reddits are generally pretty bad and I’m not going to use Twitter. My guess is the answer is (much like the RPG space) “just know which Discords are good”? Curious if folks here have better answers (or invites to good Discords lol)

Also are there any good programming Cohost tags I need to check out?

When I was doing more hobby Rust stuff, Rust community spaces were generally better than most, but still not ideal. I’m curious if that’s still the case, and if so what specific spaces folks recommend.

Some good examples:

  • I would love to attend Recurse Center when (if?) the pandemic ever ends and they go back in person
  • !!con (Bang Bang Con) has a great energy in its community around joy and experimentation, but as far as I can tell it doesn’t have a permanent presence

Some anti-examples:

  • The suckless devs are obnoxious and at least one seems to be cryptofascist
  • anywhere geared primarily towards new programmers - nothing against learning! I’m just not looking to “learn to code” or anything, just looking for a place to interact w other programmers
  • anything too focused on one tool, language, or ecosystem. I work across web and graphics, I do hobby compiler stuff, I used to do game dev, etc. Rust is the only language-specific community I’d be interested in but even then, eh?

PS: I’ve seen a few cool things come out of the “Handmade” community but also some truly obnoxious people, so I’m curious if folks have a good read on their general deal
