I missed this being announced last year, but Skandix has gone through the effort to get new headlights for integrated bumper 1987-1993 (plus 1994 convertible) 900's made and TÜV E-Mark certified!
These 'E-Code' headlight assemblies are a bolt in (but not wire-in; more on that in a bit) replacement for the north american market DOT-approved headlights, use H4 bulbs instead of increasingly the uncommon 9004 bulbs, and are brighter with a better beam pattern. And even factoring in shipping from Germany, they're fairly inexpensive, especially considering how new headlights (in either DOT or E-Code varieties) have been unavailable for several years now, and used ones in usable shape are going for $300+ a piece.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason (probably cost), Skandix did not get the bulb covers (SAAB p/n 8539710/30-772-1102) remanufactured, nor do they provide the wiring harness pigtail, as they intend these to be used as a 1:1 replacement for european market vehicles with damaged factory headlights. So right now, if you buy a set of these to upgrade/replace your vehicle with DOT headlights, you need to source the former used from the EU as they were only used on the E-Code headlight equipped 9000's from 1986-1998 and 900's from 1990-1993 (plus 1994 convertible), and custom make the latter yourself, using male 9004 to female H4 plugs and a sealing grommet (edit: McMaster 7291N16 works perfectly grommet-wise) for wiring harness.
In possible good news for anyone in the future, according to a Facenook post by the guy who runs Modern Classic SAAB, those two problems in the above paragraph might be solved by a kit they plan to sell through their storefront, but I have no idea on what it'll cost when (and if) it does go up for sale.
not only are the Skandix replacement headlights real, but I've managed to make my own 9004->H4 adapters, and scrounge up the bulb covers from two separate Latvian junkyards that happen to be basically right across the street from each other. I just need to go buy some H4 bulbs and mount these on the car.
watch this space.
and accept that this bastard stepson of AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstäderna deserves more time than many others were willing to give it.
