When I bought my Switch I said I wouldn't make a backlog on it. I bought it with BOTW and said I wouldn't buy anything else til I beat it. I didn't buy the Switch on launch but within a year or two, forget exactly when. And as you saw the other week, I just beat BOTW lmao. I didn't stay true to never buying ANYTHING but I really did a lot better than say, my Steam library! Anyway, as was always the plan, just years late, I bought Super Mario Odyssey upon finishing BOTW. Tonight I cleaned up the last of the moons I was interested in getting, bringing my total to 872 and now I am done! Whew!

The game for me was so joyful, I really loved it. What a love letter to SM64. I have so much nostalgia for SM64, seeing all the little nods and homages throughout and then finally getting to the Mushroom Kingdom, ah - I was giddy! I had avoided watching speedruns and streams of Odyssey for years now and had never seen any of the Mushroom Kingdom or like the blocky SM64 outfit, god I just loved it.

As any true 3D Mario platformer, I did spend a number of minutes throughout my whole playthrough cursing and fighting the camera, but of course much less than it's predecessors. The moons I knew I was skipping early on were 4 skills-based ones (fuck 100 volleyball hits, 100 jumprope skips, winning that fucking RC race in under 26 seconds, and that fucking circuit S bounding race). I did do the boss rush on the Dark Side, and talked to Captain Toad, but when I looked up all the rest of the moons on the Dark Side and saw the gimmick was "shit you've done before, but now harder!" I just cleaned up the found art moons and called it. Oh, and I did dip into the Darker Side, but after dying like 5 times in a row on the first goomba spinny guy, I was like "you know what, fuck this too :eggbug-relieved: " (everyone cheering you on made me a little emotional lmao, what a nice touch)

I'm mildly curious about grinding coins to a) finish buying outfits, which were a huge highlight of the game to me, so cute! and b) but the 119 moons required after the 880 unique moons to get to 999, buuuuuutttt....seems like a chore. I did buy some moons with the money I had at the end, just to pad my total.

Sigh, what a great experience, I'm so glad I finally dove into it. I've been playing for like a week straight, heh. Now debating if I should take a breather or ride the momentum straight onto Mario Wonder, which I've also so far avoided seeing much of. Time will tell!
