store-bought is fine

I thought this one was a lot of fun, but it got a great deal of mileage out of the fact that seeing it in a full theater makes you feel as though you’re actually part of the live studio audience in the film. It was quite immersive and made for a unique experience.

It’s a somewhat flawed movie which I think is getting slightly overhyped and I don’t think that it would hit the same at all watching at home or in an empty theater, but it’s certainly worth seeing if you can go to a showing at a peak time. Ian Bliss is by far the best actor here, he’s delightful and completely carries the film.

The AI art is really baffling. It’s solely used for a few simple interstitial “we’ll be right back” type images of shit like a cartoon owl sitting on a TV set. I sincerely do not understand the point of it. The filmmakers go to SO much effort to build this authentic 70s set and get the cinematography, costuming, etc. just right, then they churn some half-assed images out of Midjourney that they could have paid any artist a few hundred bucks to make a superior version of. There are noticeable imperfections and weirdness in the AI art despite their touch-up efforts, and it damages the immersion in the setting which is kind of the only thing this movie has going for it. Even outside of the ethical issues, it was a stupid choice that harms the quality of the film. It just looks cheap.

In conclusion, Ghostwatch is better. You will never be Ghostwatch. Sorry!

Edit: WNUF Halloween Special is also better.
