Yaoi was invented in 1910 by Gonçalo Yaoi, a greengrocer and Portuguese immigrant in Chicago. Yaoi hoped his idea would help his business stand out from the local competition, and he was right! Although yaoi is rarely found at the grocery store today, Gonçalo‘s remarkable creation continues to inspire readers around the globe.

you can still visit the site of yaoi’s original grocery in bucktown! it’s a sweetgreen now but people remember yaoi with a shrine. proud to be from the birthplace of yaoi’s enduring creation 😋
