It's been a long while since the last time I got extremely hyped for a game release. It was Mario Kart 8, a whole decade ago. I remember watching every single trailer and desperately waiting for release date; and then running to the store (well, not running, I had to take the metro) as soon as I got the SMS saying my preorder was ready. I did nothing but play that shit for at least a month.
And it hasn't happened since.
- Smash Ultimate released when I was already part of the far superior RoA competitive scene, so I wasn't as exited for it to come out, not did it feel as gratifying as MK8.
- I was pretty excited for Cassette Beasts when it came out, since the demo blew my mind and it was a new thing, but maybe it was because of the release date, maybe it was because I didn't have a life of nostalgia backing me up, it felt as just any other release, "oh right it's coming up next week".
- F-Zero 99 should have been the thing that really got me, but a) the news leaked, b) it's a "free with NSO, online only, will shut down within two years, based on the original, 99-type game", and I don't really dig those, and c) I was on the train ride back home during the direct, with a few minutes of delay, which meant that my phone got bombarded with discord and twitter notifications saying "YO @frik NEW F-ZERO FOR YOU" while I was still watching the trailer for Mario vs DK.
So maybe I've lost it! Maybe I don't have the hype in me anymore! The last hype trin has departed the station! Maybe I'm not as excitable as I was 10 years ago! Maybe being exposed to so many more game news has made each release feel lesser. Maybe I just don't like games as much as I did back then...
