every time i get a popup halfway down an interesting article with JOIN OUR FREE NEWSLETTER!!! SIGN UP HERE!!!! i imagine myself getting to slug the idiot who came up with it so hard their head flies off like a rock-em-sock-em robot

"why is everyone's attention shit? why can nobody read an entire article without leaving"
REAL FUCKIN MYSTERY THERE! YOU GOT A REAL HOUDINI ON YOUR HANDS!!

i dismissed the modal popover that stopped the page from scrolling and now there's a booger taking up the bottom third of the screen imploring me to subscribe to the newsletter that i just refused to sign up for.

i wish i could send bombs through email

i honest to god wonder why people do this. like, think about it:

you are showing that you care so little for your readers -- that you care so little about YOUR OWN FUCKING WRITING -- that you are willing to interrupt it, constantly, with begs to engage.

25% through this article i have been pestered to sign up for this newsletter at least 4 times (there are even more scrolling down, including at the end). "no spam" is clearly a lie.

fuck this kind of user-hostile design. because that's what it is: user-hostile.

in reply to @xkeeper's post:

The amount my team had to push back against the marketing person to avoid doing these on our site was absurd lol.

Even from the most cynical perspective: the point of our articles is to drive traffic to the rest of the site anyway, newsletters don't really help with that! 'Newsletter subscriptions' just seems to be a major tunnel-vision statistic.
