Would watch anime through Netflix (my parents had three discs for renting at a time, so my sister and I would rent 1-2 discs for a series) and streaming was included as a bonus for free. Nowadays it's nearly $20 a month just to stream and no DVDs.

Also remember streaming on PS3 was free with the disc, meanwhile Xbox 360 users had to pay for Xbox Live Gold for the longest time to access it.

Fascinating - looking it up it appears the reason for the disc was either that Nintendo/Sony didn't want streaming apps in their console stores initially (both of them being the first console stores the companies had operated, I guess they were still figuring things out), or that Microsoft - who did have a Netflix app from day one on the 360 store - might have struck an app exclusivity agreement with Netflix that they loopholed around with the discs.
