I think the internet would be a lot better if more people could articulate why they personally don't like something without insulting the intelligence, taste or morals of people who do enjoy that thing

This isn't a subchost of anything or any single post in particular, but it's something I've noticed is very common on here

tbh it's. A little frustrating here, and it's one of the reasons people I know who refuse to use cohost cite for not doing so. We need to be more accepting of people who just. Enjoy things we don't.

particularly in techy circles (not just here! its a problem everywhere, although i've definitely experienced it here a few times), there's a pervasive elitism around things that's not super easy to recognize, until people start being elitist against things you like. like, linux is cool and all, but don't use that as an excuse to reign supreme over people who use windows because they're comfortable with it and it works for them. programming languages are also really bad with this too - like, i'm a webdev, and i genuinely don't hate it, i like building websites and working with web frameworks. and i know javascript/the wider web ecosystem really isn't in a perfect state rn but i can only laugh along with dunking on it for so long until it just becomes... sigh... yknow?

it takes a conscious effort to weed this mentality out. it's not easy to start catching yourself when you play into it, and stopping yourself. but its worth it to make a more welcoming space for more people.

It's not just here, and it's not just in the negative, unfortunately. Especially for the big franchises, it feels like every release is either the best thing ever produced (and anybody who disagrees must not be honest) or a destruction of cherished treasures (and anybody who disagrees has been brainwashed by The Man). It's especially sad when it revolves around big franchises, because you'd think that nobody in a space like this would care about recruiting fans to or away from big brands...

Which is wild to me, because this is the one site on the internet where I don't get harassed almost ever

My experiences on Twitter Mastodon and hell even Discord have made me really reluctant to be anywhere else, this place is by comparison a lot more fucking chill

Maybe there's something I'm missing, but

I mean if people are being explicitly or even indirectly harsh to you just block them, it's like Twitter or Tumblr or anywhere else, you don't owe them the time of day, and culture be damned.

Someone's always going to be passing judgment, someone's always going to be shitty, someone's always going to hate our guts. Maybe I'm just too cynical, I don't know, but I constantly think you're silently judging me, and I have to chalk that up to my own paranoia and not any actual concrete thing.

But I'm cranky, so also don't listen to me. I'm old, and jaded, and used to being loud and picking a fight if someone's talking down to me, because it was the only way to be myself and who I wanted to be under constant outside pressure. I lost fights that made me change my perspective, too. Maybe I'm just getting defensive because I hear you describing this place as the thing that drove me away from literally everywhere else, and I've never experienced it in this place, and I might honestly be part of your problem.

sometimes it's hard to distinguish between a statement made in jest and implying an elitist "you're dumb for doing that" attitude.

i notice myself not being clear enough on that front.

e.g. i don't really enjoy using js. But i would never think bad of webdevs. Sometimes i wonder if that intent is communicated well enuogh and i feel bad :/
