my equivalent to the diagram is repeating "things are always going wrong and when they do that isn't an exception to the rule but an extension of it" to myself as a mantra. "expect every week to come with a bad day. build a process around it. have someone on standby. take notes." and even if i frequently don't actually do those things it's still a reminder to my body that panicking isn't going to lead to progress

When I was still in college, I had professors who did a lot of their work at the height of the Cold War. One of them talked about their disaster recovery plan at a major defense contractor, in the event of a nuclear attack. They started drawing a circle around Midtown Manhattan, and saw their offices at the edge of the blast radius, so that was obviously bad. But they had another site an hour or so further out, so that made a good recovery site.

Then, someone asked what happens if the incoming missile misses the city. They drew another circle hitting their offices (as in still technically hitting the city), and noticed that this would take out their backup site. Not great, but apparently they had a small office even further out.

Somebody then asked about moving the wandering missile even further out. They looked carefully at the circle and realized that pretty much everybody they knew at the company lived in the circle, making this officially not their problem. That changed a lot about how I think about dealing with problems...
