been thinking about how the game should begin and i got a new idea today. so my house irl has been overrun with flies for weeks now, and it has taken me until yesterday to realize that they're getting in from under the windows so no matter how many we kill, they always come back, until we can fix that.
this inspires me- flies are a very common issue, they live practically everywhere. maybe the game could start with this same thing, tho without the windows issue. you start in your house with pixplat shouting that he can't stand these flies anymore and has no idea what to do. this is the perfect challenge bc flies operate on 1 braincell. you can easily see that the majority are swarming the garbage, containing rotten food. a few more are also swarming exposed fruit in the kitchen, and others clinging to windows and lights.
possible solutions:
- take out the trash (this will leave the flies that were swarming above the trash can to swarm the house, going to the fruit & windows as the others are)
- throw the fruit in the trash, then take it out (same as above, only now the group that was fixated on the exposed fruit will join the rest, as they all cling to the windows and lights)
- open the windows (flies on the windows will escape, and if the trash & fruit have been disposed of, all the flies will escape, unless you left any lights on in the house!)
note that you do not have a flyswatter, and if you try to do it with your "hand" it will be gross and not work, because you are made of gelatin. however, if you are at a loss, maybe you can explore the rest of the house and find a fan, which will push them around and help get them out the door if you can't figure it out.
i think this, or something like it, would make for a really good intro / tutorial level. this thought process is the core of the game- just figuring out how stuff works and using that to solve puzzles that naturally exist all around us. using that knowledge & science to do awesome things and improve things in ways no one has ever considered. but also later on, the complexity of people and life and nature, proving that science is an eternal journey, and nothing can be completely understood or controlled. we take what facts we got and we make it work.
