my main gripes with cohost's markdown rendering are:

  • code spans include the backticks

I don't understand the reasoning behind this. No other website that renders markdown does this and (IMO) it adds unnecessary visual noise.

  • blockquotes are surrounded by quotation marks

Not all blockquotes are supposed to be literal quotes, and if I wanted quotation marks I could still add them (in other words, this doesn't buy me much). Also, again, no other website that renders markdown does this.

in reply to @fullmoon's post:

i think the backticks are kinda cute but im coming from the angle where markdown is just a canonicalization of formatting that people used in plaintext messages anyway. the quotation marks and italics for blockquotes are definitely questionable though.

particularly frustrated with the blockquote quotation marks at this moment because of this bizarre interaction with multiple paragraphs: a screenshot of a blockquote element in cohost. there are three paragraphs in total, but only the last two are surrounded by quotes. what!?

edit: resorted to crappily replicating it with a custom-styled div. bleh
