New survey! So far we've talked about card games, visual novels, roguelikes, hidden gems, itch.io games, Touhou games, 3D games, turn-based RPGs, and horror games. Folks have added great games in the shares and comments sections.

So, this time: What's your favorite indie shooters?

Whether it's a first person shooter, third person shooter, top-down arcade shooter, shmup...whatever you like! They can be story-based, high-score chasers, and everything in between. Personally I've playing quite a few shmups and top-down shooters on the Steam Deck, they seem like a good fit for that device.

Which are your favorites? Let me know in the comments!

there's a few that come to mind!

probably the most indie would be warning forever, a free boss rush shmup from early 2000s (i think single dev?) where each successive boss adapts to the way you killed the previous one, resulting in really different runs each time. the replay value is off the charts and the game feel is incredible for such a simple game.

as far as touhou goes, i have a lot of love for touhou 9.5 shoot the bullet! such a fun twist on a shmup, extremely clever and incredibly fun and well designed.

my favorite cave shmup (which may be stretching the definition of "indie") is probably guwange. i think the walking movement gives a fascinating extra dimension to positioning in that game that i've rarely experienced.

ZERO RANGER - unbelievably underrated shmup. Incredible pixel art and music. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I played it.

CRIMSON CLOVER - Hyper maximalist frantic shmup. You would think a constant stream of explosions, bonus medals, gold starts, and bullets would make a game hard to follow, and yet somehow it all clicks.

HYPER DEMON - Horror score attack fps. Has to be experienced to be believed. Feels like growing a sixth sense.

Graze Counter, Space Moth, and this year's Eigengrau are my indie go-to's (that aren't Touhou, of course). Each of them are endlessly stylish and have scoring systems that reward dangerous, exciting playstyles. Love these games

i absolutely love:

The Adventures of Ten and Till: a low-res shmup that has a lot of accessibility features for players new to the genre that also let me actually beat the game's story mode which is really sick. gorgeous pixel graphics & a great soundtrack

Super Glitter Rush: a 1v1 shmup lite that pits your chosen character against a boss with various bullet patterns and mechanics. the fun twist is that you have limited shots & have to reload by catching light bordered bullets while using your shots to reflect the enemy's bullets back at it for more damage. super unique feel to it & also a great soundtrack

Jamestown is a classic, astounding pixel art and epic soundtrack along with a weird colonial-sci-fi mashup theme. Also the ships have good pew-pews. Also you can unlock comedy narration mode which is funny.
edit. it's a shmup. did I forget to mention that?
