My grandad was taken to hospital on Sunday morning, and passed away just after midnight on Monday morning. It was very fast, and very peaceful. Too fast for me to be there to see him, but there was nothing that could be done about that. I'm told his dying wish to my grandma and my mother was "Don't forget to put the bins out."
The picture is a puzzle he showed me when I was a kid. He drew this with pen and paper and asked me, what does this picture show?
I got my love of puzzles from my grandad. Whenever we visited him and grandma, he would always have a book of Hanjie (aka nonograms, aka picross) on the go. We later both started getting a magazine called Beyond Sudoku, which is a magazine of different Japanese logic puzzles - this is where I saw my first Yajilin and Slitherlink puzzles. I've been paying for his Beyond Sudoku subscription for a few years now as a regular birthday present. I wouldn't be making puzzles and I wouldn't be part of the puzzle community if it wasn't for my grandad.
Lots of other happy memories too. I ran away from home once when I was 4, just to go see him and grandma. They lived 100 miles away, so I hadn't thought the plan through. Luckily I got waylaid by some kind strangers two streets into my adventure, and then I lost track of what I was doing and asked to go to the playground instead.
See you later, grandad. I'm going to miss you.
