When I hopped on cohost, my first thought was, Ah, a nice fresh page upon which to post things. I can't wait to post all of the things I'm working on.
...And then I proceeded to, uh... not work on anything I can talk about. So maybe in an effort to have things to talk about, I think I'll make it a challenge to actually take some time to distill some thoughts about the various projects I'm working on* in some sort of weekly or bi-weekly** long*** post format.
**meaning twice a week and not every other week (hopefully)
***or not-so-long
I guess I'll start with a short introduction:

Hi, I'm Fun.
(I'll also accept Sydney or Squidney or Funwalker.)I got my start coding when I was like, 10 or 12 on neopets trying to customize my pet's page. One of my friends' moms was a ✨Web Designer✨ and her page was super shiny and sparkly and I had to know how it was made. Thus began this silly little hobby of mine.
When I was in college, my school had juuust begun to offer video games as a major the year I graduated (which I was very sour about), and as I was juggling my senior thesis, a comic making class, and a life style illustration class, I thought "eh, one more couldn't hurt" and took a video game course as well. This was a mistake. I was so overworked that I slept through my alarm on the day our final was due and our teacher had given us a big speech about how if we're not present at the beginning of class with our final projects, he will fail us. (He didn't fail me or my group--an act for which I am eternally grateful.)
Aaaanyways, before that class, I'd tried to make little games on my own, but cobbling them together into something that worked and also "was a game" had proved to be too abstract of a task for me. Until that class. It all clicked and it turned out I had a great time making games and I vowed to continue finding ways to make fun little things to play with in my spare time.

"Toys" is probably more apt of a concept for the things I usually make. I've spent a lot of time making interactive kaleidoscopes, image generators, idea generators... Lots of little things with no real beginning or end but that are fun to play with.
Then, about four years ago, I decided I needed to vomit out some of the stories I'd had rattling around in my brain for the better part of a decade and the best and quickest* way to do this was to make them into video games. As god intended.
(They were not in a suitable state to be turned into video games.)
*I understand why this statement is Wrong, but it beats making a webcomic lol.
My first idea was a visual novel.
So then I was like, "What if I made an RPG," which I have started and stopped working on at least 10 separate times in 3 different engines (first RPG maker and then Game Maker and now Godot).

Along the way, I had Many Other Thoughts, like "what if I did a point and click first," or "I'd like to work on an action game actually," and "Haha, what if I did a wario-ware style minigame collection that was wrapped in an apothecary life sim with a ticking clock time loop slapped on top of it?" "Is that a good and simple idea? No? Oh."
don't judge me okay. my brain is just like this constantly.
So instead of settling on one project like a reasonable person who wants to finish things, I, of course, have actively developing prototypes for all of these games that I juggle like hot potatoes on top of whatever it is I do regularly.
It's all very rational, you see.
I don't need to explain myself, you see.
All this to say, it's been a long road to get here, but I've given myself a challenge to try and finish a short game this year. I'm basically giving myself until January of next year to finish a tiny game. The engine is done (it's the point and click engine that I worked on for the aforementioned "what if I did a point and click first" game that grew too large in scope and I had to shelve it), the plot is written, and I'm about 1/4 of the way done with level design.
It'll be a pretty simple little game, but hopefully it'll make for a fun brain teaser for someone one afternoon.
Uh... How do I sign off... Congratulations on making it all the way to the end. I didn't mean for this to be so long, but I also felt like I needed a bit of an explanation of where I'm coming from.
Hopefully, I'll see you next week. Same squid day. Same squid place.
A much shorter post. With some little updates on what I've been working on.
