yesterday was my first time seeing a "Vocera" in the hospital and holy shit these are cool

it's a clip-on communicator a bit bigger than a pack of gum, meant specifically for medical professionals who don't have time (or clean, ungloved hands) to dick with a smartphone. every staff member has one clipped to their pocket, and it's basically a wifi-based cellphone/walkie/pager. someone calls you, it just asks "can you take a call from ?" and you hit the button to answer. controls are otherwise entirely voice enabled, so you press the button and say "call tom jones" and it calls tom jones, etc. but apparently this goes much harder. for instance, the system does wifi location tracking, so you can say things like "call the nearest transport tech" and it'll do exactly that, or "urgent page all nursing supervisors" and it'll do that too.

it's a shame that the backend is unquestionably a massive enterprise System that depends on a ton of other systems that all have to be set up and licensed at immense cost. i wonder if the hospital would let me come in and shoot a video about them lol. "hey i just had a Surgery over there. would you like a free youtube ad"

i mean literally yeah. the only difference is you don't begin your requests by stating where you're calling from (isn't it weird that the star trek badges required that when they all have IDs built in? but i guess they don't have voice announcements of their own; the Vocera actually improves on the star trek communicator)
